what the site will contain to be able to move around during the Paris Olympics

The Paris Police Prefecture opened an online digital platform on Friday, May 10, entitled Pass Jeux, which will allow people in need to make two types of request for their travel during this summer in the capital: obtain a exemption to be able to travel, throughout the duration of the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, in areas close to the sites; obtain a QR code in order to access the security zones along the Seine which will be set up during the days preceding the opening ceremony of the Games (from July 18), and on the day of the river parade itself, the July 26.

If the digital platform is to open on Friday, it will not, however, allow the registration procedure to begin before Monday, May 13, said the Paris police prefect, Laurent Nuñez, Friday morning on Franceinfo. “We are giving ourselves two or three days so that people can familiarize themselves with the rules detailed on the platform,” he explained.

In this case, it is the QR code requests for the opening ceremony which will be taken into account first. Requests for exemptions to travel around the Olympic and Paralympic sites will be examined at a later stage.

During the Games, exemptions for what and for whom?

The red perimeters, which have been defined around the various Olympic and Paralympic sites, will only concern motorized access (by car or motorbike). This will not target pedestrians or people traveling on bicycles or scooters, “who will be able to move freely”recalled Mr. Nuñez.

“These are areas where you will have continuous flows of spectators who will go to the events” and leave again, “and cohabitation with motorized traffic is therefore dangerous”, justified the prefect.

To benefit from an exemption and motorized access to these spaces, you will need to have ” a good reason “. However, the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games represent periods of two times two weeks, restaurateurs, hoteliers, doctors, service providers, etc. will be able to enter with vehicles in these red zones, in order not to penalize daily life local residents.

“It is for the management of these motorized traffic exemptions that we have introduced a Games pass, which will be a QR code or a digital certificate”, specified Mr. Nuñez. The list of possible beneficiaries of an exemption is online on the website of the Paris Police Prefecture. “We have provided for very broad exemptions after consultation with professionals, Mr. Nuñez wanted to emphasize. No restaurant, no hotel will close. »

For the opening ceremony, QR codes for what and for whom?

Regarding the opening ceremony of the Games, which is to take place – over 6 kilometers – on the Seine on July 26, and for the days preceding (from July 18), another access control system is put in place. “We are no longer on motorized traffic rules, but on stricter rules, because, around the Seine and on the first row of buildings visible on the Seine, we are establishing an anti-terrorist perimeter, which is much more wide and for which, to enter, you will need authorization,” Mr. Nuñez explained.

This authorization will no longer be necessary only for motorized access, but also for pedestrians, or people traveling on bicycles or scooters. To obtain it, you will need to prove“a good reason to go to this area” : because you are a local resident, you work there, you are a hotel guest or you have reserved an apartment. To support this, you will need to produce proof of address, an apartment rental contract, a hotel reservation, etc.

Once the request has been made, it will give rise to an administrative investigation before issuing (or not) a QR code. It will be about “ensure that the person (who makes the request) does not represent a threat to national security and safety”, explained Mr. Nuñez. Taking into account this “screening”, the response to the request for access to the security perimeter defined for the opening ceremony will take ” A few days “warned the prefect. “For traffic exemptions for red perimeters, it will go much faster, it will be almost instantaneous”he said.

Paris 2024: “no reason to think that the Organizing Committee will not be there” on private security

The Paris police chief, Laurent Nunez, declared on Friday Franceinfothat there is not “no reason to think that the Cojo (Organizing Committee for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games) will not be there in terms of volume of private security agents.”

Mid-April, in an interview with Worldthe Minister of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Ouéa-Castéra had recognized that there was “still need 8,000 to 9,000 recruitments” agents to ensure site security this summer, when the need is estimated at 20,000 agents per day on average.

According to Mr. Nunez, the possibility of calling on the reserves of the army, the gendarmerie and the police to compensate for a lack of private security agents constitutes “for the moment a scenario which is absolutely not envisaged”. “The rate of recruitment is continuing, it is not complete. We are hopeful that Cojo will succeed in recruiting its agents”.
