This section focuses on sea bathing and swimming, symbols of the democratization of sporting practice from the end of the 19th century. The opportunity to discover the important collection of costumes and swimsuits, beach outfits and accessories, kept at the Palais Galliera but above all the evolution of the relationship with the body through its unveiling in the public sphere as well as the notion of modesty and of decency. A fascinating story.

“World legends of sport” at the Samaritaine

With the exhibition World Sports Legends, la Samaritaine celebrates physical activity and is transformed into a giant podium, a way of passing the buck to the founders, Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jay, who opened the first gym dedicated to their employees in the store in 1930. the Cognacq-Jay couple, the development of their store went hand in hand with the well-being of their employees. In 1895, the Samaritaine Sports Union was created: Marie-Louise was convinced of the positive effects of outdoor activities on health.

La Samaritaine anticipates our concern and our demand for well-being by a good century by providing its employees with a gym, where they can practice fencing and boxing, and train canoeing maneuvers and, on the roof of one of its buildings, practicing sports under the guidance of a gymnastics teacher – ball games, tug of war and running training. Outside of Paris, the USS takes advantage of the Eaubonne stadium for its outdoor activities. Next to the fencing, the little queen is the star of the USS. Every year, a competition is organized at the Vincennes velodrome, attended by a crowd of department store employees. In the photos from 1922, we can see Ernest Cognacq, 83 years old, in the stands, who comes to present the winners with the Cognacq prize, highly regarded in the world of track cycling. So don’t miss the black and white archive images on the ground floor which recount these moments of history!

This summer, three artistic projects are being implemented, including the exhibition World Sports Legends which brings to life the greatest sporting events of the last 100 years through 100 iconic objects that belonged to the greatest champions. That is to say 70 athletes represented in 25 sports. Never revealed to the public, they come from the private collection of Terence Darrigade. In six spaces within the store, the tour reveals the story behind each object: jerseys, jumpsuits, kimonos, tennis rackets, helmets, leotards or pointe shoes but also trophies and medals won in national and international competitions, illustrated with photos of the Team funds. The opportunity to relive the exploits of Usain Bolt, Bjorn Borg, Nadia Comaneci, Guy Drut, Stefan Edberg, Roger Federer, Laura Flessel, Bernard Hinault, Michael Jordan, Diego Maradona, Armel Le Cléac’h, Kylian Mbappé, Nathalie Péchalat , Pelé, Marie Jo Pérec, Alain Prost, Serena Williams.

“Free figure. Stéphane Ashpool” at the Galerie du 19M

The creator of the Pigalle Paris brand Stéphane Ashpool, who dresses French athletes at the Olympics – with Le Coq Sportif – is the guest of the Galerie du 19M. He offers carte blanche at the crossroads of his world and the know-how of the artistic professions. Self-taught and jack of all trades, inventor of a world that takes root in the popular streets of the north of Paris where he grew up, Stéphane Ashpool has evolved for two decades in a universe where sport, fashion and music converge. . Winner of the ANDAM Grand Prix in 2015, he benefited from mentoring from Bruno Pavlovsky, president of Chanel SAS and 19M, who took him to art houses.

With fashion as a starting point, the exhibition Free figure. Stéphane Ashpool showcases multidisciplinary works – fashion, photography, video, music, etc. – amplified by cultural or artistic events designed with guest artists and performers. It celebrates the power of the collective and the need for transmission, a key value of the 19M and offers to discover the way in which sports clothing can be an art, a technical approach – which meets the needs of the body to move with ease in a quest for performance – but also a visual celebration through the choice of fabrics, fabrics and ornamentations.

Exhibition view

The exhibition route begins with the clothing and accessories resulting from these first works and collaborations, notably through its Pigalle brand. Accompanied by photographs and archive documents, they reflect the uninterrupted creative dialogue between the designer and the houses for almost ten years. The second sequence presents new pieces made for the exhibition: clothes with the Lognon pleated workshop of the Lemarié house, hats with the Michel house, accessories with Lesage and Lemarié and finally research on materials and shapes with Studio MTX.

“Figure Libre. Stéphane Ashpool” until June 16 at the Galerie du 19M.
