If he does a little less well than the mascot to whom he has long been opposed, a famous firefighter in blue overalls and a red cap, Sonic always comes back, at a hundred miles an hour, to leave his mark on the world video game. To mark the year of Shadow, we were able to try the new campaign dedicated to the most badass black and red hedgehog of all time! Did Shadow deserve his place in this Sonic x Shadow Generations? We tell you about it in this article!

Less than a year after the release of a new game Sonic, Sonic Superstars, tested in our columns and awarded a 14/20, the famous SEGA franchise is making a comeback. We understand, Sonic needs to exercise and swallow the kilometers, and as for Superstars he won’t be alone! If you haven’t been paying attention, it’s the year of Shadow in 2024. To celebrate, we already knew that Sonic’s rival would have the right to an appearance in the next film adaptation, but what we didn’t know was that SEGA wanted to give him his own adventure in its next remaster, Sonic Generations ! In the aisles of the Summer Game Fest, and more particularly on the SEGA stand where we were also able to discover the next game from the creators of Persona, Metaphor ReFantazio, we put our hands on this port and Shadow’s unique adventure for around thirty minutes.

Shadow doubles down: more adventures, more nostalgia for this Sonic game

Can we do more connection than the presentation of a new game Sonic in a living room where things quickly move at a hundred miles an hour? Difficult, isn’t it? Still, we were in the bath when we got our hands on this Sonic x Shadow Generations. The first thing we can say about this game is that SEGA did not set its sights on the least appreciated episode of the series to honor this year dedicated to Shadow. More than twelve years after its release, in May 2012, Sonic Generations remains one of the best-selling titles in the saga, in addition to having received a warm welcome from the community who saw it as a great tribute to the license. The reason for this enthusiastic reception was the way the game offered two variations of Sonic to traverse at once. levels in 2D and others in 3D : the best of both licensing worlds, in a way.

However, there was something wrong about this Sonic Generations, and that concerned the many control issues and framerate issues. During this test, broken down into two parts, we were able to try two levels – all those which appear in the game correspond to a selection of the most emblematic stages of the franchise – of Sonic Generations. One in 2D and the other in 3D, and we must say that we did not encounter any frame rate problems. On the other hand, when it comes to gameplay approximations in the controls, it is still a current concern. Aside from this little hiccup, we must say that the different levels can be enjoyed with as much nostalgia as ever and that the power of current PCs and machines will do it justice, without any problem. Anyway, if we were happy to take a detour via the famous Green Hill Zone, We were especially looking forward to experiencing a part of Shadow’s adventure.

A campaign worthy of Shadow, but still the same frustrations linked to the Sonic license

For this campaign scripted in the skin of Shadow, the developers of Team Sonic took the same idea, namely to resume, as for its blue rival, a selection of the best levels (from a community perspective) to better retrace Shadow’s story while the threat of Black Doom hangs over the entire adventure. Due to its presence, the different levels are distorted which makes it possible to bring a unique side to the trials of this portage. The icing on the cake, to keep with the current nature of the franchise, the developers even thought of including a new central world that draws inspiration from the episode’s open-world gameplay Frontiers. Its exploration will also depend on Shadow’s progress and the number of new powers he has acquired. In general, these All-New Doom Abilities allow you to get rid of numerous enemies and progress through the platform phases. Now that you have a good overview, we can tell you what we thought about two levels dedicated to Shadow that we were able to try on site!

First of all, we must highlight the work of the developers since we really feel that the staging and gameplay do justice to the character of Shadow. Overall, we feel that its gameplay is somewhat modeled on that of Sonic, although with notable differences. Fast, Shadow is above all a bit more feisty than his rival. As a result, we feel less of this sensation of frantic speed, even if it can achieve incredible bursts of speed. Consequently, the crossing of the levels is more choppy than for the SEGA mascot with a division which oscillates more frequently between crazy rushes and pseudo-combats. In terms of powers, we were especially able to observe the way in which Shadow can use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to slow down time at certain moments. In fact, it allowed us to build an alternative route or dodge a trap at the last minute. With these modulations, we can hope for a rather well-paced adventure with different phases which require you to remain attentiveespecially those where you have to perform QTE (Quick Time Event, repetitive presses on certain keys).

In terms of staging, there are positive things to remember from this first handling because, if we generally have little time to get excited during the deliberately frenetic crossing of the levels, there are passages in the form of in-game cutscenes which make you dizzy and provide their little effect. That’s what we can say about the first course. The second, for its part, consisted of beating a boss and, given the speed, the sensitivity of Shadow’s movements and the maneuverability, it was not the most pleasant part to play nor the most enjoyable. The problem is that this little problem was marred by a lack of instructions on what to do, a recalcitrant and poorly placed camera as well as inaccuracies and small, slightly frustrating passages. Ultimately, these kinds of stretches in Sonic games are not necessarily the most expected and unforgettable: we will therefore prefer to stick to the first part of our test, hoping that the final version is generally like this portion during the release scheduled for October 25, 2024 on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
