How to create a US Apple ID for the US App Store (and download Delta for free)?

Create an American Apple ID to download applications not available in France on the American version of the App Store.

Not all iPhone users are equal. As proof, it very often happens that very popular applications are offered for download in one country, and not in another. This is what happened, for example, last year with Threads, the competing Twitter application launched by Meta. The application was in fact available in the United States, but not in Europe (and by extension, not in France), because it did not yet comply with European data protection regulations. Since then, Meta has done what is necessary to comply and offers Threads for download in France.

But it sometimes happens that certain applications are available on the App Store in other countries, but not in France. This is what happened a few days ago with Delta, a Nintendo console emulator. Originally, this emulator was only offered on the AltStore, an alternative application store to the App Store. And until a few days ago, this store was only installable on the iPhone after implementing a rather restrictive hack. This is no longer the case, at least for European users. Because thanks to the DMA, the new European regulation on digital markets, Apple had to open iOS to allow users to download applications outside the App Store.

And, without much surprise, the first alternative store to the App Store was the AltStore, where the famous Delta emulator is located. Good news therefore, for Europeans who can officially install a console emulator on their iPhone. To avoid making anyone jealous, Riley Testut also thought of others, he submitted his Delta emulator to the App Store for American users. And the good news, apart from the fact that Apple has validated the application, is that Delta is free to download for American users.

For Europeans, however, Delta isn’t exactly free. Riley Testut, the developer of the AltStore (and Delta) has indeed made the decision to charge for access to his AltStore. You must in fact subscribe to an annual subscription of 1.80 euros to be able to download it. Not very fair play for European users, but undoubtedly necessary for the developer to cover its costs, Apple imposing certain fees on developers of alternative stores.

Never mind, Delta being available for free on the US App Store, why not go there to download it directly? Manipulation is indeed possible, but requires an essential element: that you have an American Apple ID. Here’s how to do it.

1. Go to the Apple ID creation page

Open your web browser and go to the page appleid.apple.com. Click on Create your Apple ID at the top right of the window.

2. Create your Apple ID

You are now on the page to create your Apple ID. Fill in all your information, then on the line Country/Regionselect UNITED STATES. You can keep the prefix +33 (France) and indicate your French telephone number to validate your account. Finally select SMS for validation, then fill in the captcha. Then click on Continue.

3. Validate your email address and phone number

To validate your account, you must now enter a validation code received at the email address corresponding to the one used for your new Apple ID. Once the code is entered, click Continue.

A second validation, for your telephone number, is this time requested. Enter the validation code received by SMS and click on Continue.

Your new Apple ID is in principle created. To use it, you now need to connect it to your iPhone.

4. Log in to the US App Store

First of all, be aware that if you disconnect your French Apple ID from the App Store, you risk losing music downloaded locally to your device if you use Apple Music.

However, to connect to the American App Store, open the iOS Settingsselect your Apple account currently logged in at the top of the screen, then enter the menu Media content and purchases. In the pop-up that appears at the bottom of the screen, select Sign out. A confirmation alert should then be displayed. This indicates that you will not only be disconnected from the App Store, but also from Apple Music, Apple TV and other Apple services. Press on Sign out to validate.

Now that you’re logged out of the App Store, tap the menu again Media content and purchasesthen in the “Use Media and Purchase as (your name)?” window, tap “You are not (your name)”.

A new page allowing you to log in to an Apple ID should then open. Enter so the email address of your US Apple ID and press Continue. Then enter your login password and tap To end. You should receive a validation code via SMS to enter. Once this formality is completed, you should be connected to the US App Store.

5. Go to the App Store

So open the App Store on your iPhone then on the welcome page, press Continue. App prices should now be displayed in dollars. You will be able to download (without having to enter a payment method) all the free applications offered on the US App Store. You can take advantage of this, for example, to download the Delta emulator, at the princess’s expense.

6. Verify your login

When you download your first app, Apple will likely ask you to verify your Apple ID. Push the button Check in the alert that appears, activate the button to Accept the General Conditions and press Following.

For Complete setup, Apple asks you for a certain amount of information, such as a payment method and a billing address. Select None for the payment method. For required billing address information, enter any U.S. mailing address (for example, that of a loved one) and any phone number. Press on Following to validate, then Continue in the Apple ID Creation Complete window.
