The ten video games from “Summer Game Fest” that caught our eye

It has been the high mass of video games for 25 years: E3, the world video game show in Los Angeles, was definitively buried this year, after two editions canceled in 2022 and 2023. But gamers in need of announcements saw it replaced by the Summer Game Fest, a series of online game presentations, at the same time as the old E3… This year, around fifteen conferences were organized from June 6 to 11. And if we haven’t seen anything revolutionary, there are still some potential little nuggets.

Indiana Jones returns to video games

We saw a little more this week on the next video game adventure of cinema’s most famous archaeologist, dubbed in French by the irreplaceable Richard Darbois. On the menu, fights, exploration, Nazis and always this daring bias: a first-person view, to be 100% in Indy’s shoes.

The game is developed by the MachineGames studio, already at the helm of the last episodes of Wolfenstein, another game where Nazis were killed in succession.

“Life is Strange” returns to its origins

It’s another return, that of Max Caulfield in the series “Life is Strange”. Surprise success of the French video game in 2015, this narrative game between emotion and fantasy is 10 years later finally entitled to a direct sequel (the episodes released since then were centered on other characters and other places), with the big return of its heroine capable of manipulating time.

Small but strong, the “Ants” by Bernard Werber

Still on the French video game side, the adaptation of “Ants”, the series of novels by Bernard Werber, gave details on its universe and its release date, November 7. You will have to develop your own colony of insects there, and protect it from predators at all costs.

The first images are reassuring, the game looking superb and immersive (we don’t see any game interface, which is intriguing: is it only for the purposes of the trailer?), and we can’t wait to face beetles, spiders, and other critters.

An epic adventure made in Montpellier

An intriguing title: “Clair Obscur: Expedition 33”, attracted the attention of players with its stunning visual universe: the first images of this role-playing game developed in Montpellier show a melted and distorted Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe cut in two. It promises.

Medieval shootings

After a particularly successful reboot and an equally enjoyable sequel, “DOOM” does not seem ready to leave players’ thumbs alone. In “DOOM: The Dark Ages”, revealed at the start of the week, we will once again have to defeat hordes of several hundred demons. But this time, exit the futuristic context on Mars: head to the Middle Ages. Where we obviously already found guns and… giant robots? Oh, why not.

A dark and magnificent fable

A promising reboot here too, that of “Fable”, a cult role-playing game from the first Xbox, released in 2003 under the direction of Peter Molyneux, a video game legend. The first trailer, revealed this week during Summer Game Fest, is promising: humor, fantasy, and the atmosphere of a tale gone wrong… It’s all there.

A seventh quest across civilizations

While we’re on the subject of returns, here’s one from one of the most popular strategy game series of all time: “Civilization”. The seventh episode has just been revealed in a surprisingly stylish trailer (we’ll let you discover). As a reminder, the Civilization series allows you to lead an entire people from prehistory to the beginnings of the conquest of space, and it is known to be one of the greatest free time sinks ever created in video games. Come on, just one last lap and we’ll stop…

The wandering of a Prince through time

It has almost become an Arlesian: the highly anticipated remake of “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”, a cult game from Ubisoft released in 2003 which was notably at the origin of the “Assassin’s Creed” series, will finally arrive in 2026… Which makes evil tongues say that the developers are undoubtedly developing the game by going back in time, to be totally faithful to the temporal powers of the Prince.

Behind-the-scenes reality TV

A more innovative concept, that of “The Crush House”, presented this week by original nugget scouts Devolver Digital. You play the role of the producer of a neon and crazy reality TV show, responsible for boosting audiences by filming young people, their clashes, their loves and their personal dramas. But be careful, when night falls, something much more worrying seems to be hiding behind the scenes…

The first 5D game (2D+3D)

Finally, we end with the strangest concept discovered this week: “Screebound”. You play a character who explores his reality on a portable console, moving simultaneously in the world of the game and in that of the game within the game. Isn’t that very clear?
