Boxing is one of the 32 sports to see during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Here is everything you need to know about this combat sport, which is very popular with the public. [Lire la suite]

Boxing in a few words, what is it?

It’s a combat sport, which is practiced in pairs in a ring, with gloves, and the goal is to hit the opponent! (laughs)

How are the tests going?

Boxing is quite special, the competition will last ten days, it is in the form of draw so I don’t yet know which opponent I will meet, nor which day I will box. We are judged by five judges who decide whether or not we win!

Where do the tests take place? What do you think of this spot?

The first ones take place at Villepinteif I don’t talk nonsense, and from the final stages, it’s up to Roland Garros ! It will be magnificent, I’m so happy and it motivates me to pass all these tests and find myself there!

Which countries represent the toughest competition for you?

It’s the Canadasince the world champion in my category (-75kg) is the Canadian.

What does that change in terms of preparing for the Olympics at home?

It changes a lot of things, there is everyone who takes into account what we say, who helps us and puts in place lots of structures so that we can perform on the big day.

How does the preparation go when you are qualified?

The preparation is quite personalized, I can choose the competitions I want to do. We do a lot of internships, soon I’m going to go to Colombia (Editor’s note: the interview was conducted in November 2023), and I’m going to prepare with the best!

Tell us your story with boxing!

She is beautiful and complicated at the same time! I started very young, it was my father who introduced me to combat sports, I started with karate, kickboxing and then I finished in boxing. I am Martinican and it made me travel a lot to so many different countries where I shared great adventures, this sport made me grow as a woman!

What has it brought you to your life?

For me, boxing is life, it teaches me resilience, courage, it allowed me to share with so many different people, in victory as in failure. It also allows me to earn my living today and that wasn’t necessarily the case a year and a half ago!

Which athlete inspired you?

Marie-José Pérecbecause she’s a West Indian like me and she’s someone who has had a fairly difficult and magnificent journey!

What sets you apart in your discipline and gives you a better chance?

It’s my technique, my way of seeing fights and my ups and downs, it makes me a better athlete and a better person.

What would you say to those who find it a violent sport?

We call it the noble art and it’s not for nothing! For me, it’s not violent, it’s a sport of strategy, we have to find solutions, score points, push our limits… It’s a sport that brings together so many things, it’s my sport favorite !

How do we remove the fear of getting hit?

So, you should know that I’m afraid all the time, in all cases! It’s not necessarily easy to get into a ring, but I’m a very courageous person and IThere is no fear without courage ! It’s pushing your limits and your fears, I’m confident and anyway, I have my staff and my team with me to support me.

How do you find your place in a sport that is often judged as masculine?

Many sports are considered masculine and yet, that is not necessarily the case! That doesn’t stop me from being very feminine, look at my social networks, I assure you it’s okay, I’m still managing! I’m not necessarily marked, until now, I’ve been lucky, I hit more than I’m hit. Honestly, people can talk, but really, you have to try!

The place/club in Île-de-France where you trained and which marked your life?

It’s the Garges Boxing Club, you should know that it is a team with which I have been close since juniors, so when I was at INSEP, there were quite a few people from this club who were in the French team with me. I found one there family ! It’s the best women’s club too!

What advice would you give to those who want to get into this sport?

Don’t be afraid, come and try it out! We are not necessarily great competitors or all Olympic champions but it allows us to become aware of your body, to relax, to have confidence in yourself too. I wasn’t necessarily when I was younger, whether in relation to my height because I’m 1m83 and that allowed me to take charge, to feel good, even mentally, it allows me to unload. There are quite a few benefits in boxing, you have to take the plunge and you will see!

Do you have a credo, a phrase that you often repeat to motivate yourself?

I don’t necessarily have a philosophy, but there are certain phrases that I tell myself to move forward, like “Tchimbé raid, pa moli“, at home, that means”hold on, don’t weaken” !

A quick word for our readers?

For Paris 2024, it would be great if we were together, look at us, support us! It’s not often, we’re at home, we have to go as a team and let us show that we are present!

The special SAP question: do you have a favorite place you like to go to in the region and that you would like us to discover?
