how to declare your income on your smartphone

The time has come to declare your 2023 income for the calculation of 2024 taxes. Good news, you can do it very quickly on your smartphone with the Impots.gouv application, provided you respect certain conditions.

For several years, the income tax return – which is often called “tax declaration» — can be done very easily online from the dedicated website made available by the General Directorate of Public Finances. Even simpler: a large number of taxpayers can even benefit from the automatic declaration option on the Impots.gouv application available on the Play Store (Android) and the App Store (iOS).

Who can file their taxes on mobile?

On the Impots.gouv application, a feature allows you to file your 2023 income declaration for 2024 taxes in just a few clicks to transform this administrative chore into a matter of a few seconds. This is the automatic declaration. However, not everyone is necessarily eligible to take advantage of this convenient option.

The Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Recovery specifies that this function is available “if you have no modification (or only that concerning the contribution to public broadcasting) to make to your pre-filled income tax return which is displayed on your smartphone or tablet“.

On a dedicated page, the ministry cites two criteria to be respected to have access to the automatic declaration on the Impots.gouv application:

  • all your income and expenses for 2023 are well integrated into the pre-filled declaration;
  • you have not reported a change in your personal situation (address, marital status, etc.).

In other words, only people whose income is transmitted online, who do not have any particular elements to report when calculating their net taxable salary and whose tax situation has not changed since last year can claim automatic declaration on the application.

Other taxpayers needing to make certain changes are invited to turn to the website.

When is the deadline for filing taxes on your smartphone?

You must declare your income before a deadline that varies depending on your department. The online process benefits from more comfortable times than for the paper format, but be careful:

Department numberDeadline
from 01 to 19 and non-residentsMay 23, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
from 20 to 54May 30, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
from 55 to 976June 6, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

The deadline for a paper declaration is Tuesday May 21, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

How to declare your income on the Impots.gouv application?

To declare your income, install and launch the impots.gouv application. To connect to your particular space, the easiest way is to flash your tax number on a previous letter. You can otherwise find it on most tax documents, including your last tax notice.

We invite you to save this tax number in a password manager, to always have it at hand. Your particular space is also protected by a password that you choose. The Impôt.gouv application also allows you to log in via the fingerprint reader or facial recognition system of your smartphone.

Once connected, simply tap Automatic declaration.

There pre-filled declaration is displayed SO. As noted, you cannot edit anything from your mobile. You can only check that your location, postal address, email address, income and bank details are accurate. All that remains is to validate the declaration and that’s it.

A confirmation screen is finally displayed, from which you can download your declaration to archive it. A confirmation email is also sent.

Pay attention to your N26 or Revolut accounts or cryptocurrency exchanges

Although it is impossible for us to detail all the particular cases, there is one situation to which we must draw your attention, that of bank accounts opened abroad.

We effectively relay the news of financial technology (FinTech) and online banks and neobanks. However, some of the most popular are based abroad. This is the case of the famous German bank N26, but also of Revolut (whose head office is located in Lithuania).

If you opened an account with a foreign bank last year, you must declare it at the same time as you declare your income. You must therefore complete form no. 3916 (Cerfa no. 11916) from “Declaration by a resident of an account opened outside France“. You can declare it online, together with your income. We invite you to read our dedicated tutorial in order to avoid a potential fine of 1,500 euros.

Furthermore, it will also be necessary to remember to declare all your accounts on cryptocurrency exchanges. If you have opened a Coinbase, Binance or BitGet account to bet, among other things, on Bitcoin, you will need to declare it.

Please note that all these accounts must be declared, even if they are empty, under penalty, again, of a fine of 1,500 euros.
